Find Forgotten Money in Gmail With ChatGPT
Connect Gmail to ChatGPT and have it search for forgotten refunds, credits, gift cards, vouchers, rebates, checks, and other potentially recoverable value.
Search systematically, then verify
ChatGPT can use a connected Gmail account to search for refunds, credits, vouchers, gift cards, checks, and other potential value. The tutorial’s central rule is to verify every candidate before treating it as money.
What this tutorial does
You will ask ChatGPT to run multiple targeted Gmail searches, organize candidates in a conservative table, and then perform a second verification pass that looks for later payment, redemption, expiration, or resolution emails.
What you need
A ChatGPT account with Gmail connected, permission for ChatGPT to search the mailbox, and time to open the supporting emails and independently confirm each result.
Search for forgotten value
- Connect Gmail to ChatGPT.
- Start a new conversation.
- Paste the main prompt below.
- Allow ChatGPT to perform multiple searches.
- Review the result table.
- Paste the verification prompt and ask ChatGPT to verify each candidate.
- Open the supporting emails.
- Independently confirm the value before counting or claiming it.
Main Gmail search prompt
Copy the complete prompt below into a new ChatGPT conversation.
Use my connected Gmail.
I want you to thoroughly search my email history for money or financial
value I may have forgotten about.
Search systematically for:
- refunds
- reimbursements
- store credits
- account credits
- airline or travel credits
- vouchers
- gift cards
- gift certificates
- rebates
- cash-back rewards
- deposits that may be refundable
- cancelled-order refunds
- subscription or service credits
- checks or payments that may still need to be claimed
- other legitimate financial value that I may still be able to recover
Do multiple Gmail searches using different keywords instead of relying on
one broad search.
Search across my full available email history, including Promotions when
relevant, but exclude Spam and Trash.
For every candidate, read enough of the email or thread to determine what
it actually is.
Do NOT count:
- coupons that require me to spend money
- percentage-off promotions
- sales advertisements
- credit-card or loan offers
- sweepstakes
- fake or suspicious emails
- duplicate notices about the same refund
- refunds that clearly already reached me
- credits that were clearly redeemed
- expired credits unless there is evidence they may still be recoverable
Create a table with:
1. Company
2. Amount
3. Type of value
4. Email date
5. Why you think it may still be available
6. What I need to do to claim/use it
7. Status: CONFIRMED / NEEDS VERIFICATION / EXPIRED OR USED
8. Confidence
Be conservative. Do not inflate the dollar total.
At the bottom give me:
CONFIRMED RECOVERABLE VALUE: $___
POSSIBLE VALUE NEEDING VERIFICATION: $___Verification prompt
Run this after ChatGPT returns the first candidate table.
Now verify every item you just found one by one.
For each candidate:
- reread the original email
- check the surrounding thread if available
- look for later emails from the same company indicating the refund was paid,
the credit was used, the voucher expired, or the issue was resolved
- remove duplicates
- remove promotional offers masquerading as value
- do not assume something is still available merely because an old email says
it existed
Only classify something as CONFIRMED if the emails provide strong evidence
that the value is real and may still be usable or claimable.
Give me a revised table and revised totals.
I care more about accuracy than getting a big number. What the result should look like
Expect a conservative table with company, amount, value type, email date, reasoning, next action, status, and confidence, followed by separate confirmed and needs-verification totals.
